Federal Release Status Paths
BOP manages sentenced federal prisoners. USMS often controls federal pretrial detention and transport. A person can therefore disappear from the Sumter detention roster during a federal pickup without entering the community. The county jail movement record should name the receiving agency, while the Marshals record covers the pretrial movement and the BOP locator becomes the long-term public route after a federal commitment.
A past BOP release date and no listed institution support that BOP custody ended on that date. “Released” or “Not in BOP custody” has a limited meaning. It does not prove that court-ordered supervision ended, that another government did not assume custody, or that every federal movement is displayed. The Sumter County release search provides the county record branch needed to connect the local and federal episodes.
Confirm a Federal Release
The BOP Inmate Locator supports number and biographical searches. Use a register number when available because names can be shared or recorded with variants.
- Open the official locator and choose a number search for BOP, DCDC, FBI, or INS identifiers when one is known.
- Otherwise search the exact first and last name, adding race, sex, and age only as needed to narrow results.
- Match the federal register number and identity. Record the displayed facility, custody wording, or release date exactly.
- If the result says released or not in BOP custody, compare the date with the federal court case and any Sumter jail movement.
- Request BOP or USMS records when the public status does not explain the handoff, release authority, or destination.
BOP generally covers people released from federal custody from 1982 onward. Research on an earlier federal term routes to the National Archives. A future release date is projected and may change.
Federal Release Records Contact
There is no local BOP prison or local BOP release desk documented for Sumter County. Use the locator for public status and the agency's national request process for a durable release record.

Use the BOP Inmate Locator for public status
Use BOP FOIA for release records
Use USMS FOIA for pretrial movement records
The BOP FOIA and Privacy Act page explains the federal request route and is captured below:

The request page is the correct next step when a locator result is too brief. Identify the person, register number, approximate dates, institution if known, and the exact record sought. For pretrial custody or transport, use the U.S. Marshals FOIA route instead of asking BOP to create a movement record it does not hold.
Federal Custody Near Sumter
No federal prison was identified in Sumter County. The Sumter detention center does report holding federal inmates, and its reviewed portal configuration showed an active U.S. Marshals category. This establishes that local detention can form one part of a federal custody chain. It does not show that every federal defendant is held there or that a named person had federal status.
The county jail remains the custodian of its own admission and movement line. Ask for arresting or holding agency, actual movement date and time, destination, and detainer. A USMS pickup closes the local episode while federal custody continues. Later BOP admission may occur at an institution far outside South Carolina.
Note: No local BOP capacity, address, release schedule, or direct facility phone exists because no Sumter County BOP prison was found.
BOP Release Locator Fields
The locator can be searched by identity or federal numbers and returns custody wording and a release date for covered records. It is a strong public starting point, but a short result cannot always explain how one custody system handed the person to another.
| Locator item | Use |
|---|---|
| BOP register number | Stable federal identifier for matching records. |
| DCDC, FBI, or INS number | Alternative number-search keys accepted by BOP. |
| Name, race, sex, age | Biographical route when no register number is known. |
| Facility or status | Shows current BOP placement or no current BOP custody. |
| Release date | Past federal exit or a future projected date, depending on context. |
Keep the access date and exact wording. The locator may be updated, and a projected date is not the same as an actual event. Confirm a consequential historic fact through the agency record.
Sumter Federal Handoff Records
A county roster disappearance during federal transport should be recorded as transfer unless direct evidence shows community release. Ask the Sheriff whether USMS or another federal custodian received the person. The court docket can identify a federal case route, but the movement time belongs to the jail or Marshals record.
Once sentenced and placed in BOP, the federal locator becomes more useful. Before that stage, a person can remain in a local contract bed or move among facilities without a BOP institution appearing. This is why a negative BOP result during a recent pretrial case does not prove freedom.
For an older gap, ask USMS for its existing custody and movement record and BOP for its own admission or release record. The two agencies may document different stages. A request that names the register number, court case, local booking, and date range is easier to route than a broad demand for every federal record.
Strong Federal Release Proof
A locator result with the correct register number and past release date provides useful official public evidence. Pair it with the federal judgment or release order and, where needed, a BOP record. If the inquiry begins at the Sumter jail, also preserve the county movement line that identifies federal pickup.
The official BOP Inmate Locator displays the number and name search routes:

The locator image shows the correct federal system, not a Sumter or SCDC search. Use it only for federal custody. A county detainee or state prisoner will not be resolved merely by searching BOP.
Federal Release Versus Transfer
Another sovereign may take custody at the end of BOP control. A detainer is a request or notice that another authority seeks custody. The BOP status can be accurate while the broader statement “free in the community” remains wrong. Look for court, immigration, state, or local records that explain the next step.
ICE uses a separate locator, and SCDC uses separate current and released applications. Neither is a substitute for BOP. Use the branch only when a record supports it. This system-specific method avoids treating every blank result as release.
Note: Preserve each agency's event date and access date because current tools answer different points in the custody timeline.
Federal Custody Record Chain
A federal custody history can cross three custodians. The Sumter Sheriff records a local contract booking and the movement that ended it. USMS controls many pretrial transports and can document a handoff that never appears as a BOP prison placement. BOP records the sentenced federal stage, including covered public release information. Send each request to the office that created that segment instead of asking one agency for the entire chain.
The federal court judgment and docket explain the sentence and legal orders. They do not replace the jail gate time, Marshals movement, or BOP release transaction. Match all records through the register number, federal case number, local booking number, exact name, and date of birth where available. Record each agency's event date separately.
BOP generally makes locator records available for federal prisoners released from 1982 onward. A pre-1982 inquiry routes to the National Archives. Even within the covered period, a locator result is concise. A focused BOP request can seek the existing admission, institution history, release date, release status, or destination field. A focused USMS request can seek its custody or movement record for the federal pretrial interval.
A future BOP release date remains projected. Credits, court changes, detainers, or other federal calculations may alter it. After the displayed date passes, check the locator again and preserve the actual status wording. When another authority takes custody, keep the BOP exit and the receiving agency's admission as two different events.
