Sumter Released Mugshot Records
A booking photograph documents appearance during a specific arrest or admission. South Carolina's Freedom of Information Act broadly includes photographs prepared, owned, used, or retained by a public body within the definition of public records. Access remains subject to exemptions and other laws. A custodian may withhold or redact juvenile, sealed, expunged, personal, or safety-sensitive material.
Release does not turn the image into proof of what happened in court. An arrest photo does not establish guilt. It also does not show where the person is now. The matching booking number, agency, booking date, charge, court case, and release record are needed to place the image in context. The Sumter court record may show dismissal, acquittal, a plea, sentence, or another result, but the jail movement record supplies the actual exit.
For the county detention episode, the Sumter County Sheriff's Office is the custodian. SCDC handles its own institutional photographs. A photo found in a separate registry or news post serves that source's purpose and is not a general jail-release record.
Find Sumter Released Inmate Mugshots
No single photo search spans the Sumter jail, SCDC prisons, SC VINE, and special registries. Start with the agency that held the person during the event. Then match at least two stable identifiers so a common name does not attach the wrong image to the wrong custody episode.

Commercial repositories may retain a copy, but they are incomplete and can be stale. They should be treated only as leads. No commercial mugshot publisher or paid-removal service is linked or endorsed.

Sumter Mugshots Leave the Roster
The Sumter current-inmate portal enables a mugshot, name, race, sex, date of birth, and arrest date for current records. The Sheriff's own explanation says the portal does not provide history once a person is released. That creates a narrow official photo window. The image may be visible while custody remains active and then vanish with the booking entry.
Roster absence cannot identify the reason. The person may have bonded out, completed a term, been transferred to SCDC or another jail, entered federal custody, or left under another movement code. Use the Sumter County 24-Hour Releases fallback process for a recent event, since the Sheriff does not publish a rolling release feed.

Request Sumter County Booking Photos
The Sheriff provides an official FOIA information page and a public-record request form. Address a Sheriff record to the Legal Division at P.O. Box 430, Sumter, SC 29151-0430. The county also has an online portal, but the Sheriff's stated channel is the direct route for a detention record.
A narrow request is easier to identify and price. Ask for an existing booking photograph, not a new summary. Include the full name, date of birth or booking number, approximate booking date, and relevant case number. Also request the booking and release date-times, arresting agency, release type or movement code with its definition, destination, and detainer outcome. Those fields prevent an image from being mistaken for proof of community release.

The posted fee schedule lists copies at $0.40 per page and staff search, retrieval, or redaction at $12 to $22 per hour, with specialized staff potentially higher. CDs or DVDs containing photos, audio, or video are listed at $10 per disc. Electronic transmission has no per-page copy charge, though staff time can still apply. A deposit of up to 25 percent may be required.
Under Section 30-4-30(C), the determination period is ten days excluding weekends and legal holidays, or twenty such days for records more than 24 months old. If granted, production follows within 30 calendar days after determination or deposit, or 35 days for older records, subject to written extension. These are statutory processing periods, not a promise of instant access.
Sumter State-Prison Mugshot Records
A county booking and an SCDC institutional photograph are different records. The SCDC current search shows the latest frontal SCDC photo and its date for a person now incarcerated by the state. It does not cover someone whose only custody was at the Sumter detention center. Once the person leaves SCDC, the ordinary current record drops out.
The separate SCDC Released Inmate Search confirms state releases by date range and committing county. Its grid includes SCDC ID, name, sex, race, age, release date, release type, county, and a sex-offender indicator, but no photograph column. Use the SCDC ID to reconcile the released row with an existing institutional image, then request that image from SCDC without assuming it must be disclosed.

Special Sumter Photo Registries
The SLED State Sex Offender Registry may display several photographs, aliases, location, and qualifying offense information for a person who has a legal duty to register. It is not a list of all released inmates. Presence proves a public registry record subject to SLED's warnings, not the date of a Sumter jail or SCDC release.
SC VINE can show an image when the supplying agency and interface make one available. Its central purpose is status and notification. It is not a durable booking-photo archive, and transfer between agencies can require a new registration. Use the supplying agency's record for the photograph and exact movement event.

Remove Qualifying Sumter Mugshots
South Carolina Section 17-1-60 prohibits obtaining or publishing state arrest and booking records while knowingly making removal or revision depend on payment. It also prohibits demanding payment to remove, revise, or refrain from posting such a record. For qualifying cases that were discharged, dismissed, expunged, or ended in a not-guilty result, the law creates a free-removal process based on a compliant certified-mail request and required certified proof.
The statute calls for removal without a fee within 30 days when its conditions are met. A plea to a lesser or different offense may call for correction rather than removal. Government and news-related provisions also matter. The exact text should be checked before claiming a remedy.

Its documented process matters because payment cannot lawfully be made a condition of qualifying removal or revision.
Sumter Mugshots After Expungement
Section 17-1-40 separately controls qualifying expunged arrest and booking material. It makes sealed arrest records, warrants, mugshots, fingerprints, and related booking material nonpublic. The law includes a special institutional retention and destruction framework of three years and 120 days after the expungement order for stated facility and litigation needs, with exceptions for an initiated matter.
That period is not the normal retention rule for every booking photo. It must not be used to claim that all Sumter County mugshots vanish after the same span. Expungement eligibility and process vary by offense and history. General Sessions applications route through the circuit solicitor, while summary-court matters follow their applicable process.
If a once-public photo is gone, sealing or expungement is one possible reason. Vendor retention, a changed portal, and identity mismatch are others. Ask the custodian whether the exact record is public, sealed, destroyed, or simply absent from the online display.
